AI Videos of Fallen Russian Soldiers Raise Ethical Questions

(MENAFN) AI-generated videos and images showing Russian soldiers are increasingly circulating on social media, with families reportedly using the technology to depict lost or missing relatives in emotional “reunions.”

One widely shared 15-second clip, posted on Instagram by a blogger known online as Katya Jin, shows a stylized scene of a snowy Moscow street filled with billboards announcing an end to the war in Ukraine. The video includes the message, “The Special Military Operation is over,” using the Kremlin’s official term for the conflict.

In the fictional footage, a woman pushing a stroller recognizes a uniformed soldier and embraces him tearfully. The pair are visually modeled on the creator and her husband, who in reality is believed to be missing after disappearing at the front, with his fate still unknown.

According to reports, such AI-generated content portraying Russian servicemen has become increasingly common on social media since mid-2025. These posts are often shared by relatives of soldiers fighting in Ukraine, presenting idealized scenes in which they are depicted as returning home or being reunited with family.

Most of the videos emphasize themes of heroism and patriotic sacrifice, while omitting the destruction and civilian impact of the war in Ukraine. Ukrainian viewers and others online have reportedly reacted with alarm and criticism, describing the content as deeply disturbing.

The trend has sparked broader ethical concerns about the use of artificial intelligence to reconstruct or fictionalize wartime realities, particularly when it involves missing or presumed-dead individuals.
