Sweden Scrambles Jets Twice to Shadow Russian Aircraft Over Baltic
The Swedish Air Force launched both missions using JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets after radar picked up Russian aircraft operating in proximity to Swedish airspace — once in the northern Baltic and once in the southern stretch of the sea.
Hanna Heurlin, a spokesperson for the Swedish Armed Forces, confirmed the intercepts were carried out as part of Sweden's standard air policing operations, stressing that vigilance over the region is continuous.
"We are constantly monitoring our airspace and surrounding area," she told the broadcaster.
Military officials confirmed that Swedish airspace was not breached during either encounter. The Gripen jets tracked the Russian aircraft until they had moved to what was deemed a safe distance, after which the Russian planes appeared to set course toward Kaliningrad — Russia's strategically significant exclave on the Baltic Sea.
The southern Baltic intercept drew broader allied involvement. Danish fighter jets joined the operation as part of NATO's collective air defense framework, underscoring the alliance's coordinated posture in the region.
"The operation is being carried out in a coordinated and resolute manner to secure the alliance's territory," Heurlin said.
When pressed on the intent behind the Russian flights, Heurlin declined to speculate — but stopped well short of dismissing the incidents, characterizing them as serious.
