US Warns Against Violating Iran Maritime Blockade in Talks with India
The US State Department said on Saturday that Rubio held talks with Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, with both officials addressing recent developments in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the statement, Rubio emphasized that all commercial shipping vessels must immediately follow directives issued by US forces as part of efforts to maintain what Washington described as peace and security in the strategic waterway. He also stressed that violations of the US blockade, including the illicit transport of Iranian oil, would face consequences.
Meanwhile, Jaishankar said on Friday that during his discussions with Rubio he raised strong objections to US strikes on vessels near the coast of Oman amid enforcement of the blockade in the Strait of Hormuz. Writing on X, he stated that the attacks resulted in the deaths of three Indian sailors and described the use of force against commercial shipping as unjustified.
He added that India had formally conveyed its protest over the incident to US officials.
