US Confirms Ongoing Iran Ceasefire Amid Questions Over Formal Agreement

(MENAFN) US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Tuesday that the ceasefire between the United States and Iran remains “in effect,” even as lawmakers questioned whether any formal written agreement exists between the two sides.

Hegseth made the comments while testifying alongside Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Gen. Dan Caine before a House Appropriations subcommittee. The session focused on the Trump administration’s proposed 2027 defense budget as well as developments related to the conflict with Iran.

Tensions rose during questioning from Representative Pete Aguilar, who challenged Hegseth over previous testimony in which he indicated that the ceasefire had paused the 60-day timeline under the War Powers Resolution.

Aguilar asked who the parties to the ceasefire were. Hegseth responded: “Well, right now we are in that same ceasefire, as of right now.”

When pressed further, Aguilar repeated his question, prompting Hegseth to clarify: “That would be the United States and the regime in Iran.”

The lawmaker then continued to question whether the ceasefire was supported by any written terms or official documentation, seeking clarification on the legal basis of the arrangement.
