Arrest of Top Cartel Figure Sparks Violence in Mexico

(MENAFN) The arrest of cartel figure Audias Flores Silva by Mexican special forces on Monday triggered a rapid escalation of violence in parts of western Mexico.

Flores Silva, also known as “El Jardinero,” had reportedly been identified by Mexican intelligence months earlier as a potential successor to Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes—widely known as “El Mencho”—the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), who was killed by Mexican troops on February 22.

Following his detention, local media outlets reported that vehicles and businesses were set on fire in the states of Nayarit and Jalisco, both considered key strongholds of the CJNG. Authorities said unrest spread across at least six municipalities, prompting officials to advise residents to stay indoors.

So far, no injuries have been reported in connection with the disturbances.

According to a joint statement from the Mexican Navy, the Secretariat of Security, and the Attorney General’s Office, Flores Silva was arrested while trying to flee through a drainage system at a safe house in Nayarit, a coastal state in western Mexico.

Mexican authorities, working with intelligence support from US agencies, had reportedly tracked his movements for 19 months before locating him in the community of El Mirador.

Despite being surrounded by an estimated 60 bodyguards and 30 vehicles, security forces managed to detain him without gunfire, officials said. The statement described the operation as highly precise, noting that it was completed “without the need to fire a single shot, with no fatalities, injuries, or collateral damage.”
