Death toll mounts as protests continue in Iran

(MENAFN) The number of people killed amid ongoing protests across Iran has climbed to 2,550, including 2,403 demonstrators as well as 147 members of the security forces and government supporters, according to figures cited by reports on Tuesday.

On the 17th consecutive day of unrest, at least 614 protest events were documented in 187 cities spanning all 31 provinces, based on data compiled by monitoring groups.

The same reports indicate that authorities have carried out 18,434 arrests so far. In addition, there have been 1,134 cases of serious injuries and 97 reported instances in which detainees were forced to make televised confessions.

Despite these figures, there is still no comprehensive official tally released by the Iranian government regarding casualties linked to the protests.

Communications restrictions remain in effect, with the country experiencing 132 hours without internet access, according to network monitoring organizations.

Iran has faced sustained waves of demonstrations since late last month, beginning on Dec. 28 at Tehran’s Grand Bazaar. The unrest was initially sparked by the sharp fall of the national currency and worsening economic conditions, before spreading rapidly to numerous other cities.

Iranian authorities have accused the United States and Israel of supporting what they have described as “armed rioters,” alleging that such groups have carried out attacks in public areas across the country.

US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that Washington is ready to take “very strong action” if claims that Iran intends to execute detained protesters are confirmed.

His remarks followed questions about a message he had earlier shared on social media stating, “Help is on the way.”

"Well, there's a lot of help on the way, and in different forms, including economic help ... We put Iran out of business with their nuclear capacity," he said, referring to US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities carried out in June last year.
