China calls on US to respect international law after Trump’s remarks

(MENAFN) China has urged the United States to adhere to international law following comments by US President Donald Trump suggesting that his actions are restrained only by his personal moral judgment, according to official remarks made on Wednesday.

Responding to questions from reporters in Beijing, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson emphasized that “The international law based on the purposes and principles of the UN Charter is the corner stone of existing international order and important basis for settling international disputes.”

She further stressed that “Upholding international law is key to defending international fairness and justice and preventing a return to the law of the jungle,” addressing Trump’s recent statements.

Without directly naming the US, the spokesperson added that “Major countries need to take the lead in respecting international law and fulfilling their obligations under international law.”

The comments came after Trump was asked in a recent interview whether there were any limits to his global authority. He replied: “Yeah, there is one thing. My own morality. My own mind. It’s the only thing that can stop me.”

He went on to say, “I don’t need international law,” while also adding: “I’m not looking to hurt people.”

When questioned further about whether his administration is obligated to follow international legal frameworks, Trump responded, “I do,” but qualified the statement by saying, “It depends what your definition of international law is.”
