EU Sees 6 Percent Surge in Fresh Vegetable Output
(MENAFN) The European Union's fresh vegetable harvest reached 62.2 million tons in 2024, marking a 6% increase compared to the previous year, according to data released Monday by Eurostat.
Leading the pack, Spain produced 14.8 million tons, followed closely by Italy at 13.9 million tons and France with 5.8 million tons. Several key vegetables saw notable growth in 2024: tomato production rose by 5%, carrots increased by 6%, and onions surged 11% year-on-year.
Conversely, the EU’s output of fruits, berries, and nuts—excluding citrus fruits, grapes, and strawberries—declined by 2% to 24.3 million tons. Italy, Spain, and Poland dominated this category, generating 5.4 million, 4.3 million, and 4.1 million tons respectively, collectively accounting for 57% of total EU production.
Apple harvests fell 4% from 2023 to 11.6 million tons in 2024. The bulk of EU apple production was concentrated in Poland (29%), Italy (21%), and France (17%).
This mixed performance highlights shifting trends in EU agriculture as vegetable growth contrasts with declining fruit yields.
