EU’s Metsola: Zelenskyy-Trump-EU Meeting Could Shift War's Course

(MENAFN) European Parliament President Roberta Metsola described Monday’s high-stakes meeting in Washington—featuring U.S. President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and top EU officials—as a potential turning point in efforts to end the war in Ukraine.

“Yesterday's important meeting in Washington could be the game changer for a path to peace in Ukraine that we have all wanted and worked for,” Metsola posted Tuesday on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

Referencing the recent Alaska summit between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, Metsola said coordinated diplomacy was increasing the likelihood of a durable resolution. “A chance for real peace is now realistic. Difficult, but not impossible.”

She emphasized that the European Union, rooted in its postwar founding principles, remains committed to fostering peace. “We know the cost of war all too well,” she said, warning that any eventual deal must be underpinned by firm protections for Ukraine’s sovereignty.

“Real peace must be built on strong security guarantees for Ukraine in order to last and not simply be postponed to a larger war down the road,” she stated.

Underscoring the bloc’s long-standing stance of “nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine,” Metsola insisted that Kyiv must lead the negotiating process. “We know that a Ukraine that is not supported, that does not have the strength to deter those that would take it by force, will not be in a position to find that elusive peace,” she said.

“This is what Europe has been saying since day one. That is why we stand with Ukraine. That is why Europe will continue to play its part,” she added.

Following the talks, Trump revealed he had spoken to Putin and was working to organize a direct meeting between the Russian leader and Zelenskyy. A broader trilateral summit involving the three presidents is reportedly being planned, according to a late Monday post on Trump's social media.

No further details were released by the White House, and the Kremlin has not yet confirmed participation.
