Meloni Rejects Military Deployment to Ukraine
This matter came to the forefront during discussions held before multiple European heads of state, along with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, traveled to Washington for diplomatic talks with US President Donald Trump.
This high-level visit occurred shortly after Trump’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska the previous Friday.
The news agency’s article highlights that French President Emmanuel Macron advocated for a collaborative European military presence in Ukraine.
In response, Meloni questioned the practicality of such a move by stating: “Russia has 1.3 million soldiers – how many should we send to be up to the task?”
Earlier in March, Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer introduced the idea of forming a “coalition of the willing,” intended to provide land and air troops in a peacekeeping role, should Ukraine and Russia come to a ceasefire or formal peace agreement.
Rather than committing to a military deployment, Meloni put forward the notion of granting Ukraine a protective guarantee similar to NATO’s Article 5 — which ensures collective defense in the event of an attack — though without actually making Ukraine a formal NATO member, the Corriere article added.
Back in March, during an address to lawmakers in Rome, Meloni firmly stated that “sending Italian troops to Ukraine is a topic that has never been on the agenda.”
